Electric Vehicle Technology

Electric Vehicle (EV) Safety will incorporate an Introduction to Electric Vehicle Technology and Safety, AC/DC Electronics and a Safety Capstone. You will learn 1) standard transportation industry history and terminology, introductory concepts, hand tools, electric vehicle safety, environmental regulations, service information. Topics include familiarization with major vehicle systems, material safety data sheets, and personal protective equipment, 2) DC Electronics deals with the descriptive and analytical relationship between voltage, current, resistance, power, and energy in series, parallel, and series/parallel DC circuits. You will learn about Ohm's law and basic additional network laws and theorems as they are applied to DC circuits. AC Electronics studies alternating current and its uses. You will learn about basic voltage and current, and electronic devices. All classes are Pass/Non-Pass and must be passed to earn the certificate. Program Learning Outcomes: By the completion of the degree, the student will be able to analyze proper workplace preparedness for the Electric Vehicle industry; evaluate and implement proper safety procedures; analyze and solve complex DC circuit problems, including those involving series, parallel, and series/parallel configurations, using Kirchhoff's Laws and network theorems; utilize test instruments and measuring techniques effectively during hands-on lab experiences to construct, analyze, and troubleshoot DC and AC circuits.

Electric Vehicle (EV) components will incorporate Battery Technologies, Electrical & Chassis Control Systems, Braking Systems, Steering & Suspension Systems and a Components Capstone. You will learn 1) technologies used in modern battery storage systems. You will learn about basic battery chemistries, DC characteristics, safely handling cells and battery packs, manufacturing practices, and battery packs' installation in various applications, 2) basic transportation electronic systems, including programmable logic controllers, computer control systems, telematics, high voltage systems, using CANBus and other protocols, and electronic accessories. Topics include theory, operation, diagnosis, service, and repair of starting, charging, lighting, airbags, power accessories, and various body computer control systems, 3) electric vehicle braking systems, including electric and hydraulic power brake assist, electric parking brake systems, servicing rotors/brake pads, and regenerative braking systems. Topics include theory, operation, diagnosis, service, and repair of electrically controlled brake system components and control systems, 4) electric and hydraulic power steering systems, along with modern suspension systems including theory, operation, diagnosis, service, and repair of steering and suspension systems and components, wheel alignments, and all-wheel alignments. All classes are Pass/Non-Pass and must be passed to earn the certificate. Program Learning Outcomes: By the completion of the degree, the student will be able to implement safe handling practices when working with battery cells and packs, demonstrating a thorough understanding of battery safety precautions; apply hands-on skills acquired during lab sessions, including component identification; diagnostics extraction from CANBus, and troubleshooting of electronic systems execute the service and maintenance of brake systems, including rotor and brake pad servicing and brake fluid inspection and replacement.; apply hands-on skills acquired during lab sessions, including the diagnosis and repair of steering and suspension components, wheel alignment procedures, and all-wheel alignment techniques.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Software/Firmware Diagnostics will incorporate advanced Electrical & Chassis Control Systems, Climate Control & Thermal Management and a Diagnostics Capstone. You will learn about 1) advanced transportation electronic systems, including programmable logic controllers, computer control systems, telematics, high voltage systems, navigation, collision avoidance systems, using CANBus and other protocols, and electronic accessories. Topics include theory, operation, diagnosis, service, and repair of starting, charging, lighting, airbags, power accessories, and various body computer control systems, 2) refrigeration and heating, electrical/electronic controls, and diagnosis and repair of climate control and battery pack cooling systems. Topics include theory, operation, diagnosis, service, and repair of climate control components and systems, recovery/recycling of refrigerants, thermal management systems, and safety and environmental regulations. Program Learning Outcomes: By the completion of the degree, the student will be able to operate testbench components by safely connecting and wiring various proper electrical connections and adhering to safety protocols; assemble a testbench using provided components from an electric vehicle, including batteries, motor controllers, motors, pedals, and screens, and configure the necessary software and wire harnesses; recognize and document simulated issues introduced by the instructor within the testbench system, demonstrating an understanding of the components and their operation; conduct in-depth issue diagnosis and troubleshooting, applying techniques learned throughout their EV components training to identify the root causes of problems within the testbench; effectively repair or replace faulty components to restore the testbench's functionality, ensuring proper operation; validate the fully assembled testbench by conducting comprehensive testing and confirming its proper functionality, and document the results for future reference.

You will learn about 1) advanced magnetism, alternating voltage and current, inductance, capacitance, time constants, resonance, and electronic devices, and 2) theory, operation, diagnosis, service, energy storage systems, Modbus protocols, and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) applications.

Advanced Electric Vehicle (EV) Components Certificate will incorporate advanced battery technologies, braking systems, steering and suspension systems, digital electronics and microprocessors, and a culminating capstone. You will learn 1) technologies used in modern battery storage systems. You will learn about battery chemistries, state of charge and state of health calculations, DC characteristics, safely handling cells and battery packs, advanced battery pack manufacturing practices, advanced diagnostics procedures and basic programming, and installation of battery packs in various application, 2) electric vehicle braking systems, including electric and hydraulic power brake assist, electric parking brake systems, servicing rotors/brake pads, and programming regenerative braking systems. Topics include theory, operation, diagnosis, service, and repair of electrically controlled brake system components and control systems, 3) electric and hydraulic power steering systems, along with modern suspension systems including theory, operation, diagnosis, service, and repair of steering and suspension systems and components, air suspension systems, speed-adaptive suspension systems, Driver Assist systems, wheel alignments, and all-wheel alignments, 4) the study of operation, characteristics, and applications of digital circuits. You will study numbering systems, codes, logic gates, Boolean algebra, logic circuits, flip-flops, counter, and timers, interfacing with the analog world and memory devices, microprocessors and microcomputers, and big-endian/little-endian conversions.
