Administration of Justice
Requirements for AA-T or AS-T degree:
Completion of 60 semester units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following:
- 40 units from either the Intersegmental General
- Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State University General Education- Breadth Requirements.
- A minimum of 18 semester units in the major as determined by the required courses described below.
- Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
Students must earn a “C” or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis. A “P” (Pass) grade is also an acceptable grade for courses in the major if the course is taken on a Pass/No Pass basis, where a Pass is defined as a “C” or better.
Administration of Justice Certificates and Degrees
The Administration of Justice Certificate prepares students for careers in law enforcement, probation, and parole. They can also work in multiple specialty areas including detectives, S.W.A.T., narcotics, K-9 handlers, and motors officers. Career opportunities are expected to continue to be strong in these areas. The curriculum surveys the history, development, theory, and practical application of knowledge in areas of law enforcement, corrections, probation, and parole. The curriculum is kept current by continuous contact with other colleges and criminal justice agencies. The training programs are certified by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) and Standards and Training for Corrections (S.T.C.).
The Associate in Science in Modern Police Science is designed to fulfill a portion of the state requirements for future employment as a full time, sworn peace officer, while preparing students to continue studies toward a B.A. or B.S. degree in a discipline of their choosing. Students who pursue a Modern Police Science degree enjoy a wealth of career options in the field of law enforcement. They work in multiple areas including patrol, detectives, S.W.A.T., narcotics, reserves, K-9 handler, traffic, and more.
The Associate of Science in Public Safety is a two-year course of study designed to prepare students for entry-level employment upon graduation from Porterville College. The Associate of Science in Public Safety offers the student vocational training programs in law enforcement, corrections, and fire. The curriculum surveys the history, development, theory and practical application of knowledge in areas of public safety. Curriculum is kept current by continuous contact with other colleges, criminal justice agencies, and fire organizations. The training programs are certified by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.), the State Board of Fire Services and the California Fire Chiefs Association.
The Law Enforcement Officer Reserve Certificate of Achievement is designed to serve students seeking either to enter or enhance their existing careers in the law enforcement profession. The courses in the certificate provide foundational knowledge for a person to enter the profession of law enforcement as a Level-III or Level-II Reserve Officer through the use of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) approved training materials.
